Cayden Taipalus isn't your typical 8-year-old. He's a third grader at Challenger Elementary School in Howell, Michigan.

When Taipalus learned that some of his classmates couldn't get hot meals because of negative lunch account balances, he decided to do something about it.

It came to his attention a couple weeks ago when his friend couldn't get a hot lunch one day for that very reason.

Cayden and his mom started by returning empty bottles and cans and asking friends and family to make donations. They raised $64 which paid for about 150 lunches.

When a local radio station mentioned Cayden's random act of kindness, it didn't take long for others to help.

Now the third grader and his mom have started an on-line campaign to collect donations.

Hundreds of people from the U.S. and abroad have donated and they've raised more than $13,400 all through the site called FundRazr. So not only are overdue accounts paid off - there's also money in the accounts now to pay for future hot lunches.

Thomas Gould, Director of Public Relations for Howell Public Schools, tells News13 that when students reach the $5 negative balance, they can't receive a hot meal but they do receive a healthy lunch, regardless of their ability to pay.
