FOUNTAIN, N.C. - Family members are still in shock after Barbara Harris Joiner and Jimmie Harris were killed in a house fire.

"They were good people. I mean, they'd do anything for you," said Betty Harris, one of the family members.

"It's hard to believe all this happened. It's a shock," Harris said.

Barbara Harris Joiner was able to rescue her mother, who suffers from Alzheimer's, from the house. But when she ran back in to get her father, who is blind, she succumbed to smoke and neither her father or herself made it out.

Those close to Barbara said she always placed others before herself.

"We always knew her as dedicated to her parents and to her family," said Demetrius Eason, a family friend. "You know she obviously was willing to sacrifice herself for her family."

The Edgecombe Sheriff's Office said they believed the fire was started when someone cleaned out ashes in a wood stove. An official cause has not yet been released.

A house fire in Edgecombe County killed two people Wednesday.

Deputies say the two died trying to get out of the home.

It started around 11 this morning near the Pitt and Wilson county lines on Old Market Road.

Deputies say Jimmie Harris and his wife lived in the home. They say the couple’s daughter, Barbara Harris Joiner, lives nearby and rushed to help her parents.

She was able to get her mother out, but smoke overcame her, as she tried to save her father, and didn’t make it out with him.

"From what we’ve gathered, the house fire started with them removing some coals from the wood heater," said Sheriff James Knight, Edgecombe County.

Those who know the two are struggling with such a tragic situation.

The home is a total loss.
