Locals react to new Facebook gun rules

Posted: Updated:
AYDEN, N.C. -
For Jerry Bowling, owner of Guns Unlimited in Ayden, his opinion on gun sales through social media is complicated.

"From a business perspective, I don't particularly care for it," Bowling said. "But from a personal side, I don't want to see the rights of the second amendment to be infringed."

What's not complicated: social media's become akin to a twenty-first century gun shop.

In eastern North Carolina alone, we found three groups dedicated to trading firearms including "Eastern N-C Gunz N' Such."

Group administrator Garrett Nickels says he does all he can to make sure his members follow the law.

"If we can't see their birthday and they're not of age, then we deny their request to join the group. if we're not able to see that, then we assume they're following the law and we add them"

He admits some underage members have slipped in before, but were removed.

Though it worried groups like Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

It successfully pushed Facebook and sister site Instagram to prevent underage children from seeing gun sales and blocking ads offering to break state and federal gun laws.

Though Pitt County Sheriff's lieutenant Chad Suggs says if someone wants to illegally obtain a firearm, there are other ways.

"Facebook's no different than the internet," Lt. Suggs said. "There's complete websites dedicated to nothing but firearm sales. Those are generally able to be viewed by children or anyone else on the internet as well."

Advocates of the restrictions call these rules common sense, but Bowling said why make up rules that are already being followed.

"I find most people who buy and sell guns to be law-abiding citizens."
