50 year old plays football

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - One man is trying to prove that age is just a number.

Mike Goetz hasn't played football since 1991 when he played for the University of Miami in the Cotton Bowl. Now, more than 20 years later and at the age of 50, Goetz is playing football for the East Carolina Raiders, a semi professional team in Greenville.

"When you put the pads on, age don't matter," Goetz said. "It's all about can you do the job, and I know I can."

Goetz was one of the coaches on the team, but kept asking if he could play.

"He came up to me at the beginning of the season and was like, 'hey, I want to try to play.' And I was like Mike, there's no way," said Marty Pittman, the head coach.

But Goetz didn't let that get his spirits down. After all, he had already survived three strokes.

"After three strokes and 50 years old, you get to wonder if you will ever make a play again, you know," Goetz said. "But I leave that to god. All I know is I'm enjoying every minute of it and I'm going to play every down like it's my last."

Goetz says he hopes he can inspire people of all ages to do what they love.

"I encourage everybody to live life to the fullest to the last day," he said. "It doesn't matter how old you are. Follow your dreams, have the courage, and leave the rest to god."
