Beaufort woman accused of swindling mother out of $70,000

BEAUFORT, N.C. - A Beaufort woman is accused of cashing her mother’s Social Security checks and refusing to pay for her care.

Police arrested 55-year-old Martha Elizabeth Loftin Friday and charged her with Felony Exploitation of an Elderly Person.

Her arrest follows a 2 ½ month long investigation following a report by Social Services that Loftin’s mother was in an extended care facility, which hadn’t received payments for her care.

Officers say Loftin had been granted Power of Attorney for her mother during the time her mother was in the health care facility. During that time, Loftin was receiving her mother’s monthly Social Security checks and cashing them. Even after the Power of Attorney over her mother was revoked by the courts, officers say Loftin continue to cash the checks and refused to pay for her mother’s care.

Investigators say Loftin also cashed a check her mother received from her deceased husband’s estate.

She’s accused of using $70,000 of her mother’s benefits and money for her own personal use.

Loftin was placed under a $15,000 secured bond.
