Kid who beat cancer fulfills dream

MANTEO, N.C. - At the age of 5, Hunter Presgrave was diagnosed with stage 2 kidney cancer.

"He asked me if he was going to die," said Holly Presgrave, Hunter's mom. "And for your 5 year old child to look at you and ask you that, that was the most heartbreaking moment I think of the whole thing."

Hunter went through several surgeries and 6 months of chemo.

"I couldn't really comprehend it because I didn't know what was happening to my body," Hunter said.

Now more than 5 years later, Hunter is cancer free. His story caught the attention of a group called Dreaming of Three, a national organization that takes children battling cancer or heart disease to the rodeo.

"I was surprised because I didn't really know much about horses," Hunter said.

Hunter was taken to the rodeo in Williamston as part of the "Rodeo Kid" program.

He says that even after the rodeo, his love for horses continues to grow.

"I kept taking care of them for a few days, and now they're like my children sort of. I just love those horses," Hunter said.

Holly says she is amazed everyday just how strong Hunter continues to be.

"He's an amazing little boy whose strength has just overwhelmed me at times. Taught me a lot," she said.

At the age of 10, Hunter knows how lucky he is to have beaten cancer. He says he credits god and all of the people who helped him along the way.

"I just thank them and praise him for giving me another day on this earth," Hunter said.
