NC officials to assess damage from winter storm

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. - Teams of local and state emergency managers are beginning to assess damages from last week's winter storm to see if there is enough destruction to seek federal recovery funds for North Carolina.

The winter storm dumped up to 4 inches of snow throughout the Triad and along the Virginia border. Ice accumulations up to a half inch toppled trees and knocked out power in much of central North Carolina.

N.C. Public Safety Secretary Frank L. Perry said there were less than 14,000 utility customers without power as of midday Tuesday. Most of those were in Alamance, Guilford and Randolph counties.

Perry said emergency management crews expect to finish the initial assessments by the end of the week.
