New Info: Arrest made in death of 80-year-old Bertie County woman

Posted: Updated:
COLERAIN, N.C. - Deputies in Bertie County have arrested a man in the death of an 80-year-old woman last week.

Sheriff John Holley tells us 33-year-old Aaron Riddick was taken into custody just after noon Wednesday. Holley says he's charged with murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon. He's in the Bertie County Jail without bond. It's unknown if he has an attorney.

Last Tuesday crews responded to a fire at a home off N.C. Highway 45, between Colerain and Merry Hill. Sheriff Holley says 80-year-old Bessie White was found dead inside with multiple stab wounds. It's believed that money was the motive for the murder.

A warrant from the Bertie County Sheriff's Office says Riddick used an 8 inch knife in the crime, and stole $400 from the victim.

Holley said the fire started when a kerosene heater tipped over, but he didn't add how the heater was tipped.
