Suspicious, but harmless package closes Beaufort road

Posted: Updated:
BEAUFORT, N.C. - A suspicious, but harmless package closed down a busy area in Carteret County Thursday.

It happened around noon on West Beaufort Road in front of the rescue squad building, where EMS staff found a sealed white FedEx cardboard box near the entrance door.

Beaufort police shut down the road and rerouted traffic back to NC 101 and Turner Street for an hour and ten minutes.

Authorities, including the Beaufort Fire Department and Carteret County Sheriff’s Department, discovered a book entitled “Zohar” and a literature pamphlet entitled “The Zohar” inside the box.

“Fortunately, this case turned out to be a harmless misunderstanding, apparently,” said Beaufort Police Chief Steve Lewis. “When it comes to the public’s safety we would rather take the extra time and precautions to ensure everyone’s personal safety, including the safety of emergency responders.”
