Baldwin Express, Interchange Ahead of Schedule

Posted: Updated:
To get to the good stuff at the end of Highway 59 in Baldwin County, you have to endure Highway 59.

"We avoid 59 as much as possible," says Shawn Taylor.

For years it's been the only game in town. "The traffic when the tourist come and they have the events, it's backed up three or four hours," says Bette Logan.

A solution to the traffic jam has been under construction for the last couple of years and now is almost finished according to county engineer Cal Markert. "They're putting down the final asphalt now and they've finished the bridge so, he's ahead of schedule. We just need some good weather for the next 60 to 90 days and we're good."

The four-laned, Baldwin Express will stretch from Interstate 10 to the Foley Beach Express. The original completion date was in the fall but if the weather holds officials say the new interchange and Baldwin Express should be open by June.
