Greenville Police warn of tax time scams

Posted: Updated:
The Greenville Police Department is warning people in eastern North Carolina about tax time scams.

Detective Frank DeSantis sat down with 9 On Your Side to explain how these scams work. DeSantis say the scammers will contact someone either by phone or through email.

The Greenville Police Department offers the following red flags:

• The fraudulent caller will say that you have a tax related issue, a grant, a lottery, a ‘loved one’ needs money, or/and  that you will be arrested if you do not comply with their fraud. DO NOT BE INTIMIDATED!

• Be suspicious of every phone call or email from a caller or sender that you do not know.

• No business or government agency will EVER call or email you and ask for any information or money.

• Second, ask questions. Ask why exactly they are calling. Ask for a name and a call-back number. If they rush you, it is part of the fraud. Time is on YOUR side, not theirs. DO NOT BE INTIMIDATED if they threaten you with the police arresting you. It is part of the fraud and this is not how the police work.

• If the caller tells you to get a WESTERN UNION MONEYGRAM or MONEYPAK CARD it’s a fraud. Don’t do it.

• If you fall victim and lose $100.00 or $10,000, the money is GONE. Banks will not reimburse you. This is not like a credit card fraud where you may be reimbursed. These suspects are not in the United States, but foreign countries, so prosecution and restitution is not possible.

• Do not let greed or/and intimidation blind you into becoming a victim. No one gives away free money. If you are thinking it’s too good to be true, IT IS.

If you receive one of these calls contact the police department (252)-329-4300.
