Civil War Weekend marks the opening of a new exhibit

Posted: Updated:
The Civil war returned to New Bern, complete with cannons, reenactments and trips down memory lane.

This weekend the Tryon Palace held its bi-annual Civil War Weekend.

Visitors were treated to a real-life military encampment, cannon drills, crafts, and special tours, throughout the weekend long event.

The event also marked the grand opening of a new exhibit the Academy Museum. The exhibit is titled “’Face to Face,’ Civil War Sketches and Stories.”

The exhibit captures the experiences of African Americans, Confederates, Union soldiers, and women caught between the North and South during New Bern’s occupation.

"The Civil War exhibit is just fantastic. It's showing new things that haven't been on display, and highlighting some older pieces that have been on display," said Tryon Palace Visitor Services Manager, Sarah Risty-Davis.

The exhibit is sponsored by Tryon Palace, The Tryon Palace Foundation, the New Bern Historical Society and the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources.

The exhibit is open to the public Saturday and Sundays from 12:30 -4:30p.m.
