Residents angry about pig waste disposal

Posted: Updated:
Neighbors who live near the Stantonsburg Swine Facility off Sand Pit Road in Greene County have complained about the stench coming from the farm for years.

"Yesterday was one of those bad days," said Isaac Ward, who lives near the farm. "You could hardly sit out here because the smell was so bad."

Ward is a Korean War Veteran who says he just wants to live his life in peace.

"I fought for my country, dodging bullets and all that stuff. I made it back here and now I have to endure the smell," he said.

The Neuse Riverkeeper Foundation and Waterkeeper Alliance filed a notice of intent to sue the owners of the farm if they didn't change the way they disposed of pig waste. The notice gives the farm 60 days to act.

Don Webb is a former pig farmer and said he warned the owners years ago.

"We the citizens went to him and asked him not to do it, but they didn't listen to us because we were little Americans," Webb said. "We were Davids and we were fighting a growing goliath."

Webb says state leaders haven't done enough about the problem.

He says many who live around the farm are just your average citizens, but deserve the same rights as the wealthy.

"We didn't dream about having mansions with yachts, jets and helicopters," Webb said. "All we dreamed about is a little garden somewhere, having fresh air to breathe, and they took that away from us. And they're taking it away everyday."
