Jacksonville Public Safety Director appointed to Crime commission

Posted: Updated:
Governor McCrory has appointed Public Safety Director Mike Yaniero to serve on the North Carolina Governor’s Crime Commission.

The Jacksonville Department of Public Safety tells 9 On Your Side the Governor's Crime Commission (GCC) has 44 members, including heads of statewide criminal justice and human service agencies, representatives from the courts, law enforcement, local government, the General Assembly, and private citizens. The GCC serves as the chief advisory body to the Governor and Secretary of the Department of Public Safety on crime and justice issues.

Spokesperson Beth Percell says Chief Yaniero took his Oath as a GCC Board member during the Commission’s quarterly meeting on March 6th in Raleigh.  His appointment to the GCC is in the Police Executive position with a term through March 1, 2017.

Senator Harry Brown stated “I can’t think of a better public safety official in the state than Chief Mike Yaniero for this appointment.  It will be beneficial to have a law enforcement executive representing Jacksonville and Onslow County serving on the GCC.”

“Since its inception in 1993, the Governor’s Crime Commission has been a catalyst in the accomplishment of many of the major criminal justice initiatives in our state.  I am looking forward to the opportunity to serve” said Chief Yaniero.
