SC Jobless Rate Drops Again, Now 6.4%

South Carolina's unemployment rate dropped in January as the number of people working in the state reached a historic high.

The January 2014 rate was 6.4 percent, down two-tenths of a point from the 6.6 percent the Department of Employment and Workforce reported in December.

It was the second month since January, 2001 that South Carolina's jobless rate was lower than the national number.

There were more than 22,000 more people working in January according to SCDEW for an estimate 2,030,996 people employed.

"Today's news is a real testament to the hard working people of South Carolina and another sign that we are continuing to move in the right direction," said governor Nikki Haley in a written statement.

"With more South Carolinians working than ever before - we are consistently proving that our state has the skilled workforce and business environment that companies here and around the world need to grow and succeed."

Union - 9.5%
Cherokee- 8.2%
Abbeville - 7.7%
Greenwood - 7.5%
Oconee 7.3%
Laurens- 6.7%
Spartanburg - 6.2%
Newberry - 5.9%
Anderson - 5.7%
Pickens - 5.6%
Greenville - 5.2%
