Atmore Hit By 110 mph Winds

Posted: Updated:
The National Weather Service says winds blowing as strong as 110 mph are responsible for storm damage in the southwestern Alabama town of Atmore.
Two stores were badly damaged when a storm moved through Sunday morning. Falling trees damaged two homes and parts of town lost power, but no one was hurt.
Forecasters say the damage is consistent with a strong downburst of winds. They estimate the wind speed at 86 mph to 110 mph.
Strong storms were over Escambia County at the time, and the weather service says Atmore had widespread damage. The weather service says there's damage along a path about 1.5 miles long.
Mayor Jim Staff says Atmore is lucky no one was injured and the damage wasn't worse.
