Two elderly residents remain in the hospital today after being injured driving off an interstate in Birmingham and crashing onto a street below Monday.

A family members told Alabama's 13 News the 88-year-old driver and passenger are still at UAB. The male driver remains in the Intensive Care Unit at UAB Hospital. The female passenger was also seriously injured, with many broken bones. Both were from the Birmingham area.

The wreck happened about 9:30 a.m. Monday off I-20, just east of the 1st Avenue North exit.

The Birmingham Police Department reports an elderly man was driving, and apparently had a medical condition which caused him to lose control.
