Starting The Cleanup In Atmore

Posted: Updated:
ATMORE, ALABAMA - This tree is older than me, it's older than you and it's older than the house it crashed into--yesterday it came down and this is one of the few homeowners dealing with extensive damage.  You can see where branches tore into Ocella Vandenberg's house.  That let water in that soaked the home.

“There's about a six or seven foot hole there and then that one when through part of the brick wall and went through into a closet,” says Ocella’s brother Jack Wright.  He calls this a blessing because his sister wasn't at home when it happened.

“It could have actually been tornadoes, one thing we want people to realize is that they have to pay attention to thunderstorm and severe thunderstorm warnings as well,” says EMA Director David Adams.  Hazel Smith is lucky a large wooden stilt crashed into her bedroom while she was at another part of the house.

“The blessed part is if I had been in bed that 4x4 would probably have gone through me,” says Smith.  For some it's a matter of waiting to see what the insurance adjuster says before they can really clean up.
