New Ship Floating on Mobile River

Posted: Updated:
MOBILE, Alabama -  The Amphibious Assault Ship America, a massive warship built by local workers at Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, sailed into The Port of Mobile Monday for last minute work at BAE Shipyard.
This ship will be used to rapidly execute a mission for the marines.  Helicopters, ospreys, and even the F-35 Lightning 2  will launch from its decks.
The America is almost finished and will be commissioned later this year in California.
In the meantime, sailors have been moving in much needed equipment and furniture to make this a home away from home while at sea.  In pictures taken by the navy, crew members carried supplies, such as beds, on to the ship last week.

The Amphibious Assault Ship America is 244 feet longer than the U.S.S. Alabama.
