DURHAM, N.C. -

Slick roads and overpasses were a concern throughout the Triangle area Monday night after rain and sleet fell for much of the afternoon and temperatures dropped below freezing.

Weather was to blame for a pair of accidents Monday that shut down the on-ramp from Interstate 85 South onto Highway 70 East in Durham.

Witnesses say a Mazda sedan spun out into the side railing around 8 p.m. The driver of that vehicle escaped unharmed before a Chevy Cavalier spun out and slammed into the Mazda.

"So I parked down here, came back to see if anybody was hurt and I found out the [Mazda] was empty," Army Command Sergeant Major Earl Lee said. "As I was walking back to my car, the second car lost control and slammed into the side of the first car."

The Chevy's driver was left trapped inside his car, forcing firefighters to use hydraulic rescue tools to get him out.

The extent of his injuries are unknown.

When asked if everyone was OK, Lee said, "All except for the guy in the second car. He seems to be pretty banged up."
