West Craven Middle School science teacher named STEM Teacher of the Month

Posted: Updated:
9 On Your Side is proud to honor our March STEM Teacher of the Month.

He's a science teacher at West Craven Middle School.
He says his students google him and are always shocked that his name comes up all over the internet for his research and training.
He's a self-proclaimed "geek to the "nth" degree”.

John Scarfpin is in his 6th year as a teacher. He's currently the STEM facilitator at West Craven Middle School, a career that wasn't his first choice.

It's those experiences that Scarfpin says makes him so successful as an educator.
But teaching comes with challenges. Budgets don't allow for assistants in the classrooms and there's a lack of resources.
Last year, Scarfpin wrote $11,000 worth of grants.
The money helped him to purchase machines like a 3D printer and a CNC machine, all needed to train students for future employers.
And that's exactly what Steve Hill with the STEM East Initiative wants to change, getting more businesses on board with the STEM program to bring in more resources.
He works with industries, schools and teachers to build a future workforce.

Scarfpin's classroom lessons are paying off. And that's exactly why Scarfpin is recognized for his outstanding work in the classroom.
Scarfpin used the $200 he received for being named STEM Teacher of the Month to take students to the statewide Science Olympiad last week, where they took home third place in the regionals.
