She's 88 years old, and she could cut a man's hair in her sleep.
"In 1960 I cut 59 in one day."
But Voncile Sadka isn't just any barber.
"I became Mobile's first lady barber in 1956," she says.
In fact, when she was 26 years old, she became the state of Alabama's first female barber. In the 1950's, she wasn't allowed to go to barber school in Alabama, so she got her permit in Oklahoma.
"Nothing's ever been hard for me."
In 1956, Sadka got her barber permit, and in 58 years, she has has owned her own barber shop, worked in the coast guard as a barber for 18 years, then found herself here at Cheryl's Barber Shop in Mobile.
Customers light up when they see her, and it's no wonder why. With a spunky personality, customers flock to see her.
"She's an icon on Dauphin Island Parkway," says one customer.
And, she's got a strategy that keeps the men coming back.
"I kiss about 5 or 6 men a day. Some kiss me on the head, some on the cheek."
Sometimes, she'll get surprised with a kiss smack on the mouth.
"I kiss him back. Wouldn't you kiss a man if he kissed you on the mouth?"
That's Voncile for you. She just goes with the flow, and she doesn't plan on putting down her shears for a long, long time.
