Fayetteville man sentenced to 8 years in prison on child porn charge

RALEIGH, N.C. -

A 46-year-oldFayetteville man was sentenced to 96 months in prison after he pled guilty to acharge related to child pornography.

The U.S.Department of Justice said a federal grand jury indicted Franklin Wade Mearesin June 2013. Meares pled guilty to receipt of child pornography on Dec. 18,according to authorities.

Meares will beimprisoned for 96 months followed by 10 years supervised release, authorities said.

TheCumberland County Sheriff's Office performed an undercover operation beginningin September related to the distribution of child pornography thoughpeer-to-peer networks, authorities said.

Theoperation was able to identify an IP address used by Meares to access apeer-to-peer network where child pornography was available, authorities said.

Lawenforcement executed a search warrant on the computer with that IP address,finding more than 12,000 images of child pornography, the DOJ said.

Thecase was part of the Project Safe Childhood initiative, a national programaimed at ensuring that criminals exploiting children are effectively prosecutedby making full use of all available law enforcement resources at every level.
