State recycling numbers reach new highs

Posted: Updated:
The North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) says the state's per capita solid waste disposal in 2013 was the lowest since measurements started in 1991.

State officials credit high recycling numbers.

"When recycling is up, meaning more recovery, then disposal is going to be down because the materials that are being recycled are being pulled out of the waste stream," said Rob Taylor, who works with DENR.

According to recent numbers, Pitt, Onslow and Dare counties ranked among the best in the state for per capita recycling.

Lisa Rider, the assistant manager with the Onslow County Solid Waste Department, says the county has improved drastically.

"We've seen the significance of recycling in terms of how it helps our local economy," Rider said.

Since opening it's Sonoco Recycling facility in 2012, Onslow county has increased the amount of recyclables per month from 12 hundred tons to 32 hundred tons.

Greene, Martin and Tyrrell counties ranked among the worst in the state for per capita recycling.

Some Martin County officials say the numbers are misleading.

"If you compare it to the other counties, take Pitt County for instance. There's a whole lot of building going on in Pitt County, and we just don't have that in Martin County right now," said Maurice Robinson, Martin County's landfill supervisor.

But Taylor says all counties, regardless of how wealthy or poor they are, can recycle a lot.

"It's about making services available," Taylor said. "By in large, citizens across the state, where ever they live, are interested in a recycling opportunity."
