Former Lenoir County Sheriff dies

Posted: Updated:
KINSTON, N.C. -
The community is mourning the loss of a man who dedicated himself to public safety.

The Lenoir County Sheriff's Office says retired sheriff Billy Smith died of cancer Thursday morning.

Smith served as sheriff from 1989 to 2013.

Chris Hill, the current sheriff, was Smith's chief deputy and says the man leaves behind an honorable legacy.

“Sheriff Smith is one of those guys that is like the son of Lenoir County,” said Sheriff Chris Hill, Lenoir County. “People loved this man. He was known throughout the state. When you thought of Billy Smith, you had good thoughts.”

He left the following statement on facebook this morning: "It is with overwhelming sadness that I announce the passing of a great man, retired Sheriff W.E. "Billy" Smith. The family has informed me that Sheriff Smith passed away this morning at the Kitty Askin's Hospice Center in Goldsboro. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of a man that has meant so much to so many people."

One of Smith's major accomplishments was securing funding for the county's jail, which was appropriately named after him last year.
