Effort to Rewrite Alabama Constitution Restarts

Posted: Updated:
MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Legislature has restarted an effort to rewrite the Alabama Constitution a few parts at a time.

The Senate approved two proposed constitutional amendments Thursday that would make a few changes to the Constitution's articles on impeachment of public officials and separation of powers.

The impeachment article added State Board of Education officials to a list of people who could be ousted. The separation of powers article had called the three parts of government "departments," and the legislation changed it to "branches."

The constitutional amendments must be approved by the House and voters in a statewide referendum to take effect.

The constitutional rewrite stalled recently when two state Supreme Court justices questioned the constitutionality of the process. Legislative leaders decided to restart using two articles with small changes.
