Task force evaluates school safety in the east

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - On Thursday, Representative Brian Brown and the chairman of the Governor's Task Force on Safer Schools toured the Chicod School in Greenville.
Their goal? To pinpoint weaknesses in security.

"The fact that it is a soft target this time, not sufficient locks, not bulletproof glass and just it's such a spread-out facility with multiple buildings that poses a huge challenge,” said Chip Hughes, NC Dept. Of Public Safety. “And the fact that Chicod School is in a rural setting, so response from law enforcement at times can be lengthy. So these are things we're looking at."

"We welcome any input from anybody on how to make our schools safer,” said Will Sanderson, Principal, Chicod School. “We feel like Rep. Brown and Mr. Hughes will have the ear of some very important people and we will get some of the resources not just for our school, but all schools in the county."

The task force is evaluating schools statewide and plans to deliver safety suggestions to the General Assembly and Governor Pat McCrory by the end of next month.
