Pain Billboards Giving Local Lawyers Pain

Posted: Updated:

If you’ve been on Airport Boulevard recently, chances are you’ve seen one of these.

“It was literally, like you said, almost overnight the whole city has been inundated with billboards.”

And at $2400 a month, it seems a law firm is setting up shop on some of Mobile’s priciest real estate

“I think what the public needs to be aware of is when you’re calling that number, you are not calling a Mobile, Alabama law firm,” says attorney Steve Moore.

1-800-411-PAIN, according to their website, is a medical and lawyer referral service with offices in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee. And while this is nothing new—

“We have been under siege by national law firms locally for months…”

This one is different just because of the sheer volume of its presence. In one spot on Airport, you can count one…two…three billboards all within half mile of each other. They have both sides of this billboard…

And this is troubling more than just local attorneys, local chiropractor James Gordon has a very similar phone number, which he says is causing lots of confusion among his patients.

“We’ve had about 10,000 patients over the years and they’ll call and say ‘Doctor Gordon I thought it was your number and got mislead and got misdirected to another facility’,” says Gordon.

Gordon has had this number for nearly 20 years, and this isn’t the first time it’s happened. But he is taking steps to make remembering easier.

“We’re trying to take the toll free number off our advertising to go back to the regular seven digit number so folks will know we’re not affiliated with this toll free group out of Miami, Florida,” adds Gordon.

But what really bothers attorneys is they’re not sure if there are any rules being broken here.

“Under the bar rules it is ethically not permissible for an attorney to send an investigator or representative to meet with you after you’ve been in an accident,” says Moore.

We did call the 411-PAIN number and talked with a woman who said she was with a law firm. She had an attorney in Birmingham return my call. He told me while they send a representative to wherever you are to fill out paperwork, only the attorney is allowed to answer legal questions.
