New Jail In South Baldwin County?

Posted: Updated:
FOLEY, Alabama - During the off season, jail overcrowding isn't a big problem in Baldwin County.

But during Spring Break and summer, the 650 bed facility in Bay Minette and small, city operated jails can reach maximum capacity.

To help with seasonal overcrowding and to to cut down on prisoner transport costs, Sheriff Hoss Mack and leaders in three coastal communities are considering building a joint, minimum security jail in the south end of the county.

The 10 million dollar, 200 bed facility would be built north of the Intracoastal Waterway.

The sheriff's office along with the cities of Foley, Gulf Shores and Orange Beach have agreed to pay for a 39-thousand dollar feasibility study. The jail study will take about three months to complete.
