ACC Tournament to move to Brooklyn in 2017, '18

RALEIGH, N.C. -

The ACC Tournament will move to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn for both 2017 and 2018, according to a report in USA Today.

USA Today said the Barclays Center is expected to hold a news conference Wednesday. Sports Illustrated had previously reported the tournament is expected to move to Brooklyn's Barclays Center in 2017.

The tournament will be in Greensboro in 2015 and Washington in 2016. The ACC Tournament has never been held north of Washington.

While a move to New York is a major change from the tournament's Southern roots, it's also a play to solidify the fan bases from Syracuse, Pitt and Notre Dame, the new additions to the league.

And, of course, many ACC schools, particularly Duke, have large fan bases in the New York area.

A top ACC official told WNCN in October that the ACC would only consider going to the Barclays Center or Madison Square Garden. But Sports Illustrated reported that the Garden is under contract to the Big East through 2026, and the diminished Big East has no desire to give up its time at the Garden.

That leaves the ACC looking at the Barclays Center in revitalized Brooklyn, just across the river from Manhattan.

The Atlantic 10 had been scheduled to play its tournament in the Barclays Center in 2017 but will move it and return to the center from 2019-21, USA Today reported.
