Columbus man accused of killing 23-month-old baby

COLUMBUS, Ga. - The Columbus Police Department have arrested and charged 19-year-old Damian Belle in the murder of a 23-month-old baby.

Columbus police were dispatched to Columbus Fire Department Station 4 on Friday, March 21 in reference to a child having trouble breathing, according to police. The Fire Department transported the child, Ki Ja Bassett, to Midtown Medical Center. She was later airlifted to Egleston's Children's Hospital in Atlanta. The child passed away on Tuesday, March 24.

Belle was booked into the Muscogee County Jail and charged with Murder (Family Violence) and Cruelty to Children in the 1st Degree. His initial hearing is set for Friday at 9 p.m. in Recorder's Court. This is Columbus' 5th homicide of 2014.
