NC lawmakers expecting fiscal update on Medicaid

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

North Carolina legislators are expecting to get a better handle on whether Medicaid will need a cash infusion yet again before the end of the fiscal year.

The General Assembly's health and human services oversight committee scheduled a meeting Wednesday. Committee members were told earlier this month to anticipate more details on the fiscal situation for Medicaid, the government's health insurance program for 1.7 million residents.

Legislators had to set aside nearly $500 million last summer to close a budget hole for Medicaid - money that Gov. Pat McCrory said prevented state employees and teachers from getting raises this year.

State budget office and legislative analysts have said it's been difficult to calculate the Medicaid picture this year because of problems and delays with a new claims billing system.
