Greenville woman wins first prize in NC branding contest

RALEIGH, N.C. - What does North Carolina mean to you?

That's what the Department of Commerce wanted to know when they asked people to creatively express it in a contest.
    
And Sara Cowell of Greenville won first prize and $2,000 in the "What N.C. Stands For" contest.
    
Cowell created a video called “Mountain Style" where a North Carolina man tells his story of making musical instruments like banjos.
    
Cowell says she doesn't normally win anything, so this made her day.

"I was pretty excited when I found out,” said Sara Cowell, Brand NC Project winner. “I was actually having a pretty bad day, so finding that out was a silver lining.'

The competition is part of the "Brand North Carolina Project." The project's goal is gather research, concepts, and creative ideas that will create a plethora of sources for future brand projects.

North Carolina is thinking about grounding the motto, "First In Flight."

Brand North Carolina has created a project aimed at creating a new state identity and a motto that is more inclusive to the whole state, trying to emulate the success of our northern neighbor's "Virginia Is For Lovers" campaign.

"I don't think they'll ever come up with a single motto for the whole state because the state is too versified,” said Tom Patro, Duck resident.

Brand North Carolina is taking submissions from people until next week and the winner will receive $2,000.
