New Bern aldermen slash non-profits' funding

Posted: Updated:
NEW BERN, N.C. - The New Bern Board of Aldermen voted Tuesday to slash its funding of four non-profits in half next fiscal year.

The moves comes as a shock to Susan Moffat Thomas, executive director of Swiss Bear Downtown Development Corporation. Her non-profit is one of the organizations affected.

"I don't know how else to read it other than they put no value in our organization," Thomas said.

Other non-profits affected include the New Bern Firemen's Museum, the Craven Arts Council and the Duffyfield Community Council.

Alderman Jeffrey Odham said the cuts are necessary because the city can't afford to provide funding.

"The city is right now facing a $2.7 million annual shortfall and that's going to be recurring," Alderman Odham said. "Unless we change our spending habits or either raise taxes."
