Sex offenders living near Raleigh community center raises concerns

Posted: Updated:
RALEIGH, N.C. -

The fact that sex offenders are living in a neighborhood near a community center near downtown Raleigh has some folks worried.

Although the sex offenders are living there legally, some believe neighborhood residents ought to be publicly warned.

According to state records, there are 72 sex offenders living with-in a one mile radius of the Neighbor to Neighbor Community Center at 1200 S. Blount Street.

Some of those sex offenders live with-in two blocks, according to the state registry.

Sex offenders are living there legally because state law only prohibits sex offenders from living within 1,000 feet of a school or child care center.

Those who run the Neighbor to Neighbor Community Center tell WNCN their facility doesn't meet those criteria. The officials at the center are aware sex offenders live in the neighborhood, and an official at  the center said least one landlord notifies them when he rents to sex offenders.

But whether it is legal or not, the presence of the sex offenders upsets a woman who volunteers at another nearby program that helps people in this neighborhood.

“They have to live somewhere, but we have to keep predators away from children,” said Evelyn Murray.

And with lots of children in the area, Murray says she'd pay to put up posters warning parents and kids about who lives around here..

“I'm willing to pay for it myself if it’s something I could legally do,” Murray said.

Some who live in the neighborhood, however, do not believe signs are necessary because people there already know who the sex offenders are.
