Posted: Updated:

Best-selling author and screenwriter, Nicholas Sparks, reached out to the sick and those battling cancer during several appearances in the Quad Cities Friday, March 28, 2014.

The novelist visited patients in the infusion center at the Genesis Cancer Care Clinic. Sparks is known for 18 novels and films--like The Notebook--that are especially popular with young people, including a 17-year-old fan he met during his morning hospital visit.

While at the cancer clinic he explained how cancer has affected the lives of those close to him.

"It's hard. You learn a lot about courage and you learn a lot about trying to remain optimistic when faced with extraordinary difficulties," said Sparks.

Sparks encouraged patients to express their feelings through journaling or another outlet.

Sparks came to the Quad Cities for an appears as the keynote speaker for a luncheon to benefit Gilda's Club at the Davenport RiverCenter. Following the event, Sparks was scheduled to appear at a sold-out Meet & Greet to sign autographs.

Sparks has sold more than eighty million copies of his novels and his books.
