An exceptional day to open baseball in Greenville

Posted: Updated:
GREENVILLE, N.C. - It’s was an exceptional day of baseball for some kids and adults with special needs in Pitt County.

Saturday marked the opening of the fifth season for the Exceptional Community Baseball League.

As part of the opening ceremonies a crowd cheered on the players as they participated in a team parade.

Following the parade players and spectators swung in the new season as Greenville Mayor Allan Thomas threw out the first pitch.

ECBL President, Gordon Darragh says this is the largest year yet for the league. This year the league is fielding four youth teams and six adult teams.

"This league provides that opportunity for those that would not ordinarily be able to play the game. They have a blast, it's great for their self confidence, it's good for their social skills, and it gets them out getting exercise. I think it's a fantastic league for the special needs population,” said Darragh.

The season kicked off with two youth games, while the crowd was treated to lunch from various local restaurants.

The league is free of charge.
