Father Charged In Child's Accidental Shooting

Charges have been filed against a Waycross father after police say a 10-year-old girl was killed in a shooting that involved her brother.

The Ware County Sheriff's Office say 33-year-old Joshua Scott Jowers is a convicted felon, who should not have had a gun at his home. But deputies say he had several, one of which his 12-year-old son accidentally shot and killed his 10-year-old daughter with on Friday.

Deputies say Powers and his wife were working and had left their two kids alone at their home in the 4900 block of Jana Lane, where the shooting around one Friday afternoon.

Officials reported that the victim and her brother were alone in the home while their parents were at work at the time of the shooting.

Deputies say the 12-year-old boy was trying to make sure the 12-gauge shotgun was not loaded, when it accidentally fired and fatally struck his 10-year-old sister.


Sheriff's deputies say a 10 year old girl was killed in a shooting that involved her brother. Authorities say it appears to have been an accident. According to the Associated Press, the Ware County Sheriff says a 911 all was made around 1 on Friday afternoon to report the shooting, which happened at a home near Waycross.  Deputies are quoted as saying that 10 year old Taylor Jowers asked her brother to hold a 12-gauge shotgun . They say the brother was in the process of removing the ammunition when the gun fired, killing Taylor.
