Residents rescued at Lakeshore Garden Apartments in Homewood

Posted: Updated:
A number of people had to be rescued early Monday morning at a Homewood apartment complex.

Authorities were called out to the Lakeshore Garden Apartments as heavy flood waters moved into the area. Overnight, water overflowed from a nearby creek and rose as high as four feet on the property.

"I heard water and I went to check the front door and I stepped in a couple of inches of water and then it just started gushing in,” described resident Lindsey Wallace.

The high flood waters covered vehicles in the parking lot and made it nearly impossible for residents to escape. The Homewood Fire Department had to rescue about 120 people from the apartment complex.  One resident said the scene was unbelievable.

"We saw other people with babies putting them in car seats and trying to get out, you know climbing out windows over here. It was nuts," explained resident Jesse Keppley.

The company who manages property says they are doing what they can to help assist residents who were displaced by the flood.

The American Red Cross also reached out to help people affected by the flood. They set up a shelter at Dawson Memorial Baptist Church.
