Community affected by tornado thankful hospital still open

Posted: Updated:
BELHAVEN, N.C. - Many of those injured when the tornado hit went to the Pungo hospital in Belhaven.

You may remember, the hospital has been embroiled in controversy and should have already have been closed. But Monday's tornado served as a reminder of just how important the hospital is to the community.

Seven days ago, Vidant Pungo Hospital was set to close its doors. Fortunately, the fight to save the hospital kept the doors open at least for 90 days.

People who live in the area say having the doors open during a tornado was more than a coincidence.

As the tornado clean up continues, many people like Silvia Coletrain, who lives in the Belhaven area, can't help but think what if the Vidant Pungo Hospital had been closed.

"This is a full example of what would happen had we not have a hospital here,” said Silvia Coletrain. “It would be very bad."

Luckily, no one suffered life threatening injuries because of the tornado.

"If we didn't have a hospital, we'd been trying to get these folks to Washington with one or two ambulances," said Mayor Adam O’Neal, Belhaven.

It's a thought that’s fresh on the community’s mind following Monday’s tornado.
