COLUMBUS, Ohio - Two people, including a 14-year-old boy, were hospitalized after a shooting near an elementary school on the southeast side of Columbus Thursday afternoon.

The shooting occurred on Whitlow Road in front of Liberty Elementary School at about 3:38 p.m. The shooting occurred in the middle of the road as the school was preparing to dismiss for the day, according to district officials.

A 14-year-old boy was transported to Nationwide Children's Hospital in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the leg. Tywan Stewart, 20, was transported to Grant Medical Center in stable condition with a gunshot wound to the foot.

Columbus police told NBC4 that the shooting victims were not affiliated with Liberty Elementary School or the nearby Independence High School.

Columbus police said officers are interviewing persons of interest, witnesses and residents. No arrests have been made.

According to Columbus City Schools, the school dismissed at 3:30 p.m., but some students were still on the grounds at the time of the shooting. Students who were still on the grounds were taken back inside the building, which was then locked down.

Independence High School, which is located in the area, was already dismissed at the time of the shooting.

According to CCS spokesman Jeff Warner, all students were dismissed and accounted for as of 5:40 p.m.

As a response to the incident, Columbus police are planning an increased presence at the school throughout Friday to ensure the safety of students and faculty of the school and area residents.
