Documents: FBI seized cash from mayor's home

Posted: Updated:

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) - Search warrants show that the day former Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon was arrested on public corruption charges, FBI agents seized dozens of items from his home and offices, including cash, computers and financial records.

Cannon was arrested March 26, and accused of accepting more than $48,000 in bribes from undercover FBI agents posing as businessmen who wanted to do work with North Carolina's largest city. He resigned the same day, less than six months after taking office. If convicted on all charges, Cannon faces up to 50 years in prison and more than $1 million in fines.

As Cannon was being arrested, FBI agents went to several locations. At his home, they found a handgun and ammunition. They also seized cell phones, bank statements and other financial records.
