A traffic stop turns into a high speed chase and fiery crash.
HILLIARD, Ohio -
Police are searching for a driver accused of fleeing from officers, leading them on a chase through west Columbus, before crashing and fleeing from the scene on foot early Friday morning.
According to Hilliard police, officers attempted to stop a vehicle for a routine traffic stop in the eastbound lanes of Cemetery Road just before 3:30 a.m. Friday. Officers say the man was driving recklessly, swerving across the road and speeding.
When officers attempted to stop the driver, he sped away, according to police. The male suspect merged onto Interstate 270 south.
The suspect exited from I-270 to West Broad Street but failed to negotiate a curve. He crossed all four lanes of traffic before crashing into a field.
The vehicle’s airbag deployed and caught fire. The driver bailed from the vehicle while it was still rolling and ran from the scene.
Police are still searching for the suspect. K-9 units from the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office were called to the scene to assist with the search.
Police say the registered owner of the vehicle has two outstanding warrants, but they are unsure if that was the person driving the car.
