FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -

A 57-year-old man died Sunday evening after a vehicle backed into him at Village Baptist Church in Fayetteville Sunday morning.

Officers responded to the church at 906 S. McPherson Church Road around 10 a.m. Sunday to a report of a pedestrian being hit.

Police have identified the victim as 57-year-old William Russell Roe Jr.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Roe got out of a vehicle and was walking to the church to get a wheelchair for a family member when he was struck by a 2009 Mercury. Police said the vehicle was driven by Roe's wife, 55-year-old Kathryn Roe.

Roe was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center where he later died.
