Highway Patrol cracking down on distracted drivers

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, N.C. -
The North Carolina Highway Patrol is cracking down on speeders and texters.

This week is "Operation Slow Down" which starts Monday and will last the entire week.

Highway Patrol will have a visible presence on major highways and interstates keeping an eye out for unsafe drivers.

They're looking for speeders, texters and any other dangerous and distracted drivers.

Sergeant Kip Sales said Highway Patrol purposely scheduled the campaign at the start of the holiday season.

"We're just trying to put an emphasis on slowing vehicles down, having following distances increase, texting and driving, driving while impaired and any more reckless violations," Sgt. Sales. "There's going to be a lot more traffic on the roadways starting next weekend."

During last year's campaign, highway patrol issued almost 20,000 citations.
