Wayne County teacher wins STEM Teacher of the Month

Posted: Updated:
Norwayne Middle School Teacher Paul Casey remembers when he used to take shop class, he still has the gun rack and baseball he made.  He says what he learned then is very similar to what his students are learning in his class today, but now the old machines have been replaced with ones that are more high tech.

His curriculum is in line with what local industries need in their future work force. According to Sharon Barber with Wayne County Schools, their philosophy is to grown your own work force. School officials want to provide an environment where students looking for jobs in the community are learning the skills needed.

Mr. Casey's students are creating inventions on 3D printers and while the idea of working on such high tech machines seems complex, it's all knowledge that Casey says all students need to compete for future jobs.

Back in March, several of Mr. Casey's students competed in the Technology Students Association's State Conference. Nine of the teams placed in the top three in the state and four of those took home first place.  They will all travel to Washington D.C. to compete in the national competition.
