Teddy Bear Hospital treats patients at Belvior Elementary

Posted: Updated:
Kindergarten and first graders at Belvoir Elementary experienced some hands on learning this morning at the school’s ‘Teddy Bear Hospital’.

Students brought in a stuffed animal and created a story of how the toys are sick and need medical attention. The young doctors got all dressed up in medical attire and checked the stuff animals into the hospital’s triage area.

Students then were able to take the stuffed animals to different medical stations for bandages, stitches, or even a cast if their animals needed it. The stuffed animals also visited a clinic where students administered vaccinations. Shots are something that organizers say many children have a fear of, and they hope the clinic can help them cope with those fears.

“We also want them to address their fears and anxiety about going to the hospital and seeing all the different instrumentation and machines, so we want to help alleviate these children’s fear of going to the doctor” said Tara Parker of the Health Sciences Academy.

The Health Sciences Academy is a partnership between Pitt County Schools and Vidant Medical Center. The academy is designed to help students gain interest in the medical field and health science vocations.
