CPD used "old fashioned ways" to solve church vandalism case

Posted: Updated:
COLUMBUS, GA - Columbus police have released more information about how they arrested a man accused of vandalizing multiple churches in south Columbus.

They say they had to use what they call old fashioned police work.

Six churches in south Columbus were damaged two weekends ago when large rocks were used to smash church windows.

25-year-old James Morris was arrested over the weekend, and Wednesday, police told us how they investigators tracked him down. It started with witness accounts and video surveillance, but, it was the rocks themselves that led the investigator to Morris.

“He went so far as to be able to track down the concrete block he used and was able to trace it back to where the suspect stayed. A combination of all those factors together led to the arrest,” said Sgt. Joe Weatherford.

Sergeant Weatherford says his team identified Morris as a suspect based on conversations with the church pastors.

Three of the six pastors had a negative interaction with Morris.

From there, investigators found concrete in the woods near Morris' home, and it matched the same concrete used to break the church windows.

Police say Morris lived within walking distance of the churches. This burglary is one of one of 448 cases that have been cleared in the last five months; they say eye witnesses play an integral role in locating burglars.

Columbus police say they have recouped more than $100,000 worth of stolen items in the burglaries over the last five months.
