16-yr.-old stowaway survives flight from California to Hawaii

Posted: Updated:
MAUI, HI - You could call it a stroke of luck for a 16-yr.-old boy who survived a dangerous trip over the Pacific Ocean.

FBI officials say the teen stowed away in the wheel well of a flight from California to Hawaii.  Somehow he was not harmed despite frigid temperatures at 38,000 feet and limited access to oxygen.

"Within a few minutes up at that altitude, the person would pass out and usually they would not survive for hours on end up there,” said Peter Forman, aviation expert.  “So it just boggles the mind,” he said.

The boy was spotted on the tarmac at the Maui airport with no identification.  That's when the FBI got involved.  After reviewing security footage officials confirmed the teen hopped a fence Sunday morning to get to the Hawaiian Airlines jet after running away from his family.  He was unconscious for most of the flight and officials say he does not remember much.  He is not being charged and was turned over to child protective services.
