Pinehurst No. 2 Hosts Media Day for US Open Tournaments

Posted: Updated:
PINEHURST, N.C. - For the first time ever one course will host both the men's and women's US Open Championships.

Historic Pinehurst No. 2 will play host to the men on June 12-15, and to the women the week after.

"It's certainly an unprecedented event," said Mike Davis, USGA Executive Director at Monday's Media Day event for the two championships. "The course has been restored back to its origins and we are really looking forward to the events."

For the first time in US Open history the host course will not feature any rough around the fairways. Some 35 acres of turf have been removed as a part of the restoration project, which returns No. 2 back to its roots. The course now features a hard, sand-surface with wire grass in areas around the fairways.

"Golfers will see a variety of lies if they are out of the fairway," said architect Bill Coore, who teamed with former golf professional Ben Crenshaw on the restoration project.

90% of all tickets for the men's championship are sold out.
